If you’re looking for a fun way to spend Martin Luther King weekend, we’d love to have you join us!

This is a small group trip – meaning there won’t be more than 10 people participating.

No cliques, no feeling left out – just food, fun, and fair fabulous weather.

Our group trips feel like going on a trip with friends – so if you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to explore Puerto Rico and make friends with other educators, this is it!

Welcome to Puerto Rico – a Caribbean paradise that offers the perfect blend of opportunities for relaxation and adventure.

And you’ll definitely experience both with us!

Once we touch down in San Juan, you’ll find that you won’t just be sightseeing; you’ll be immediately immersed into the island’s history, flavors, and natural beauty.

I’m sure you can already picture yourself wandering through the colorful streets of Old San Juan – savoring local dishes bursting with flavor, or dancing salsa under the stars.

The main itinerary for the group trip starts Friday, January 17th, 2025 – and ends on Monday, January 20th, 2025.

However, there are opportunities to add on activities for Thursday, January 16th, 2025 and/or Tuesday, January 21st, 2025 – if your schedule is flexible!

What to Expect

Accommodations

Our group trips feel more casual than tours.

It really is like you’re traveling with friends!

And on our trips, it’s very common to leave making a friend who you’ll travel with in the future.

You’ll be sharing a home, and possibly a room, with others on our trip.

Food

Since we’re sharing a home together, you’ll have full-access to the onsite kitchen.

This is great for anyone with dietary restrictions, allergies, or particular food preferences – because you can prepare everything exactly to your liking.

Beach Hopping Tour With Local in Piñones

This is an optional add-on for anyone arriving on Thursday.

Puerto Rico has an incredible beach bar culture. You’ll find everyone there!

It’s an especially great way to unwind if the week, month, or even year before your trip has been stressful.

Puerto Rico is known for its cocktails – so if you love great views and beachy drinks, then this is a must.

Salsa Dancing Lesson & Night Out

Salsa dancing is something done all throughout the region.

Once you’ve settled into your accommodations, it’s time to get ready and go out!

You can choose to just attend the class, or you can explore the nightlife of Old San Juan after the class.

We’ll be busy the rest of the weekend – so this might be your only chance to see San Juan at night!

*Some alcoholic drinks are included

El Yunque Rainforest Tour

This is when the real adventure starts!

Our group will join others as we head into El Yunque National Forest – a proper tropical rainforest.

On our way to the forest, we’ll visit Frutera Flores – known for its smoothies!

You’ll also have a chance to use the restroom and shop before we head into the rainforest.

We’ll do 15-20 minute, moderately-rated hike into the jungle – where we’ll find a natural rock waterslide and the river where you can swim!

You’ll have a few hours there – so you can explore natural pools, caves, and waterfalls… or you can sit and chat with other travelers by the river. Totally up to you!

On our way back towards San Juan, we’ll visit the famous Loquillo Beach – which is where we’ll have lunch at Kioskos de Luquillo nearby.

You’ll have 2 hours to eat, chill on the beach, and rest before we take the trip back to San Juan.

You will get wet and you will be active on this tour – so definitely plan accordingly.

And don’t worry! We’ll tell you exactly what to pack with our personalized packing list – just for this trip.

Bioluminescent Bay Kayaking

You’ll close your weekend out with a bang.

This is our activity for Sunday evening (schedule subject to change).

See the water glow as you kayak with the group through pitch-black mangroves.

It’ll be an adventure for sure!

To join this tour, you must be able to swim.

Authentic Food Tour By a Local

On Monday, you’ll have the choice of going on one of two food tours.

They’re both excellent, so you won’t make a bad choice!

The main consideration for most travelers will be their travel arrangements for that day.

Here’s a quick snapshot of what you can expect from each one:

Roast Pork Highway Road Trip With a Local

This will be an entire day of full immersion.

This tour will be between 6-8 hours long, so it’s ideal for travelers who have a bit more flexibility in their schedule (or, a later flight out that night).

You’ll walk away from this experience knowing you did something that was more than a food tour; it’s a rite of passage.

You’ll leave truly understanding Boriken flavor and culture.

Taste of San Juan Food Tour

This will be the perfect choice for a traveler who needs to leave earlier in the day on Monday.

It’s just 3 hours long, and you’ll leave full!!

If you enjoy chatting with other travelers, and if you want to see Old San Juan during the day, then this would be the better choice for you.

The Vibe

We offer four travel experiences for Traveling Teachers:

This is a group trip.

Though we do have some day tours and certain activities booked, you won’t be on a schedule that requires a breakneck pace!

As much as I LOVE multi-day tours, they can be really exhausting sometimes.

You’re up early, out late, and there’s usually no room for exploring on your own.

Worse than that – when you’re on a huge bus with 50 other people you don’t know, it’s hard to make connections!

This is why I love group trips.

It feels like you’re on a weekend vacation with friends –

But his just happens to be the first time you’re meeting.

The Purpose

The goal of each group trip is to help teachers pursue their passions, learn new skills, and travel to a destination they might not have visited on their own.

This is why we have such a variety in our itinerary!

It really is like sampler – you get a taste of everything the destination has to offer.

And, it’s flexible – meaning, if there’s a tour you really don’t want to do, talk with Brittany about it.

She chooses these specific tours and activities for a reason, and she wants you to grow past your comfort zone.

But if you’re concerned, or if you’d rather be doing something else during that day/time, just reach out to her.

Cost & Payment Plans

You can pay for your trip in full using this booking page.

The total cost per person is $1,300.

Through Wednesday, November 26th, you can lock in a price of just $900 with a 30% deposit ($270).

These prices will go up as time goes on; early bookers ALWAYS get the best deal.

Refund and Trip Cancellation Policy

Here’s everything you need to know about payments and refunds with us.

Our Deposit Policy

As soon as your booking is made, we get to work reserving the elements of your spot on our group trip.

When you make your deposit, that deposit is held with us to your account until you take a trip with us.

This means, should you need to cancel this trip with us, your deposit is safely held to be applied to your next trip.

Note that, should a refund request be made for the deposit, a cancellation fee equal to the amount of the deposit will be assessed.

Our Cancellation Policy

We understand that things happen – and for this reason, we require every traveler to have personal travel insurance for the duration of their trip.

We recommend a policy that immediately gives travelers cash advances, should something happen during your trip.

Note that Traveling Teachers will not and can not be held responsible for travel to/from the starting point of our trip.

Your insurance policy needs to cover travel to, from, and within Puerto Rico, including your flight(s) – as well as the ability to receive a payout for cancellations, since we are unable to issue refunds.

Should you need to change your plans, we can transfer your payments to another traveler if the request is made before Friday, December 27th, 2024.

About Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an absolute gem in the Caribbean.

This island has it all – stunning beaches, a vibrant mix of cultures, amazing food, and enough history to keep you fascinated for days.

Plus, since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory – you don’t even need a passport or to worry about currency exchanges.

And, even though they use U.S. dollars, there are certain things that make Puerto Rico really affordable.

One fun fact – Uber is easy to use and widely available, especially between the airport and San Juan (the capital city). However, the rates are more akin to what you’d find in other Caribbean nations – way cheaper!

Now, let’s talk highlights.

Have you heard of El Yunque? It’s the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, and it’s packed with lush trails, waterfalls, and some pretty incredible biodiversity.

Think of it as an outdoor classroom where science, conservation, and pure adventure come to life.

And for all you history buffs, Old San Juan is a dream!

It’s the oldest city in the U.S. and has these stunning forts, like El Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal – where you can actually feel the centuries of stories woven into the stone walls.

Wander around the colorful streets and discover the island’s Spanish, Caribbean, and even African heritage, all blended in one place.

About Your Host

Brittany is the founder of Traveling Teachers, and a very experienced traveler.

She’s traveled more than 20 countries, and she’s hosted trips in 5 of those countries.

She considers herself a professional travel enthusiast.

She prefers the term “enthusiast” over “expert” because the focus is on curiosity and discovery – over what somebody already knows.

As a teacher yourself, you know that we’re all lifelong learners!

This has always been her approach to travel, and with her trips.

She has an idea – a vision of what a trip or experience could be.

Then, she sets out to see if she can make it happen.

As soon as she visited Puerto Rico herself, she knew she wanted to bring other teachers to experience it.
