Cancelled Plans & Travel Podcasts

Cancelled Travel Plans

Like so many of you, I was absolutely crushed when I realized I had to cancel most of my travel plans for 2020. I was going to spend Spring Break in Finland (with some of you!). I was going to explore Iceland on a solo trip. I was really looking forward to ballin’ on a budget through the Baltics with my sister. And, I was soooo excited for my first international teacher conference.

When one considers everything that’s going on in the world, it feels selfish and shameful to be disappointed about cancelled travel plans.

If someone else hasn’t said it already, let me be the first to tell you that it is absolutely OK to be sad about something ending before it had the chance to begin.

For many teachers, travel keeps us sane throughout the year.

No matter what’s happening at home or in the classroom, we know we can look forward to our next school break, summer vacation, or long weekend. We are constantly waiting and working in anticipation of the time we’ve cut out for ourselves.

It’s no surprise that in a service-based career like teaching, opportunities for travel are few and far between. Those trips and breaks are precious.

For me, traveling is a means of self-care. I’m sure this is the case for many of you, too!

So, yes. Feel what you need to feel in this moment.

It’s OK to be disappointed, frustrated, or even angry about not being able to do what you were looking forward to.

Options for Now

Right now, the worldwide mandate is pretty much to STAY HOME.

We get that, and we’re doing it.

But so many of us miss travel!

Travel is not only the act of actually going and being somewhere. It’s the daydreaming, planning, deciding, exploring, considering and learning that takes place before you even leave your house.

Now is the best time to daydream about your next trip. One way I love to do that, is by listening to travel podcasts.

Alyssa from Teacher on a Trip and I have been talking about the possibility of creating a travel podcast for teachers for months now. We’re happy to say, it’s finally here!

Our podcast, Teachers Talk Travel, is available for listening via:

Teachers Talk Travel

I can’t tell you how happy I am that our travel podcast for teachers, Teachers Talk Travel, is officially launched! We have 3 regular episodes posted, as well as special episode, dedicated to how current world events have affected teaching and traveling. It’s a podcast for teachers, by teachers, about travel. We’re both passionate about helping teachers travel farther and more often on a budget. We hope this helps you save time and money, while maybe entertaining you a bit. 😉

Our first episodes cover “Boarding on a Budget.”

Can you tell that we like alliteration?

I can’t speak for Alyssa, but I definitely do!

Anyway, boarding on a budget is a theme I love, because it covers so much under it.

You “board” a plane.

Your trip covers your room and “board.”

So in these first few episodes, we really highlight how you can save time and money when it comes to flights and accommodations.

I’m not going to pretend that there aren’t a ton of travel podcasts out there, because – well, there are.

But ours truly stands out, because it’s a travel podcast for teachers.

Many of the normally “tried and true” travel hacks, travel tips and tricks just don’t work for us. We often can’t travel during low season, we usually can’t book last-minute, and we often don’t have the time to book when there are advantages to do so (i.e. mid-week, late at night).

So, we’ve got you covered!

You’ll learn all about the ways to save money and time when traveling, as an educator.

Our first few episodes include:

  • An interview with a Spanish teacher, who earns free trips in exchange for leading student tours
  • Travel hacks on how to save money while spending abroad
  • All about Teacher on a Trip – a teacher-blogger who designs curriculum and educational trips for teachers
  • More about Traveling Teachers, a small travel company ran by an educator who leads balanced group trips for teachers

And we are your hosts – Alyssa (top), and Brittany (bottom). We didn’t coordinate the whole royal blue hoodie thing, but it worked out nicely. 😉

Other Travel Podcasts We Love

How Not to TravelDr. Kiona talks about all kinds of interesting topics as they relate to travel. Questions like, “Is there really such a thing as sustainable travel?” And, “Are some countries really safer than others?” are answered throughout her episodes. She poses thought and poignant points of discussion.

Trail Less Traveled – Mandela doesn’t just cover travel. She catalogs stories of humanity and our planet, covering issues and sharing beauty from the most remote parts of the world. If you want to learn unique ways to travel to destinations that aren’t impacted by Instagram yet, this is where you’ll want to start.

The Budget-Minded Traveler – Jackie has been a budget travel blogger for years. She has a ton of great tips for anyone traveling on a budget, and she consistently puts out good content. She’s very reflective, covering all kinds of lifestyles and challenges travelers come across.

Extra Pack of Peanuts – Such a fun podcast concept! They compare and contrast popular countries, with countries that are nearby, and/or similar in cultural qualities.

Switchbacks – When people think of national parks, they automatically think about the United States. And while America’s national parks are beautiful and amazing destinations within their own right, there are national parks all over the world! The hosts visit national parks all over the world, summarizing and detailing their experiences.

The World Wanderers – These hosts interview interesting people with unique travel experiences and backgrounds from all over the world. They specifically focus individuals living out the travel adventure lifestyle.

The Travelers Blueprint – This podcast focuses on the buildings seen in places around the world, considering that the hosts come from engineering, architecture and environment backgrounds. They no longer lead the nomadic lifestyle they once did since they’ve settled down, so they strive to balance their cravings for adventure with the needs and flow of daily life.

I hope you enjoy these as much as we do!

And of course, we hope you enjoy listening to Teachers Talk Travel.

I love listening to podcasts, but I don’t have any travel related ones! I’m going to have to check these out. Switchbacks sounds especially interesting to me. I love National Parks!

I don’t think travel is going to ever be the same again. I used to be able to use many of the standard travel hacks to reduce my costs but i think there will be less options once the world clears up. Planning is going to be a challenge.

Pretty amazing list! I’m excited to get time and listen to some of these!

As a teacher who loves to travel too I would definitely be interested in listening to these.
